Get Noticed with a Creative Cover Letter

It’s easy to gloss over or even neglect to write a cover letter. A resume is good enough, isn’t it? Without a good cover letter, a lot of hiring managers won’t even look at your resume. Put yourself in the perspective of a hiring manager. Your company is depending on you to find the perfect candidate for a position. You receive resume after resume, and it’s just a lot of information about people you don’t know. However, you finally find a good cover letter that intrigues you and makes you really want to know this person. Or maybe their cover letter just made you laugh. Whatever the reason, you really liked what that person had to say, and now you really hope you can hire that person and interact with them on a daily basis. Here are a few tips on writing that cover letter in a fresh, fun, or creative way that will get a hiring manager’s attention.

  • Employ some humor (pun intended): Laughter really is the best medicine. Sprinkle in a few dashes of humor related to the company or the position you are applying for. Remember to keep the humor light, short, and avoid any -isms (sexism, racism, ageism, etc.). Self-deprecating humor is often a safe bet and makes you stand out as honest and genuine.
  • Tell a story: Everyone loves a good story. Stories capture our hearts, our minds, and our attention. Tell a story about your relationship with the job or the company. Do you have a specific passion? Did you love playing with Legos as a child and now that has grown into a full-fledged love of building houses? Did you dream of hypnotizing everyone as a teenager, but as an adult realized you just liked getting people’s attention? You can also tell stories of past jobs or obstacles overcome. Don’t shy away from your story. It’s a great way to let a hiring manager know who you are and what you bring to the table.
  • Brag about yourself: Maybe you have a unique skill that really helped at your last job. Or maybe you have won an award, or you got featured in a magazine. Did you send off a finished project or help grow a company in some way? Did you suggest something to a previous employer that really helped a lot? Whatever it is, be sure to start off with that story or skill, and you will surely stand out from the other job seekers.
  • Solve a problem: There are problems to be solved at every company. If you have a unique idea for solving a company problem, tell them your idea, or at least hint of it to create more intrigue.

Writing a good cover letter can take a little work and a lot of creativity. It can also be fun to come up with different cover letter approaches for different employers. Remember to always focus on the job description, while being creative with introducing yourself in a fun, light-hearted way that represents your personality and your unique skills.
